The culmination of almost a year’s worth of work in conjunction with both the Communications and the Industry Partner Task Forces, this new communications model aims to deliver more timely and relevant information in a more easily digestible way. Working with Association Revenue Partners (ARP), we are excited to offer elevated communications and increased value to our members! WSAE Chair's Message: WSAE Continues to Enhance Value Through Member Engagement
|
by Denise Husenica, MBA, CAE, WSAE Chair of the Board of Directors
International Standards Manager, National Fluid Power Association
I saw my first robin a couple of weeks ago. I have two daffodils bravely poking their beautiful yellow heads out of the ground this week. It’s official in my book – Spring is in the air!
I know, I know, Wisconsin has had snow in May, so maybe I am being a bit optimistic. However, I’m confident that warmer weather, budding tress, and green grass is right around the corner.
In my last message, I had shared that the WSAE Board’s focus is on improving educational programs, networking opportunities, and maybe even introducing a new program in 2023.
Just as Spring has sprung, I am happy to share that WSAE’s committees have been busy putting together a number of in-person events that offer multiple levels of “befriending” opportunities for WSAE members to engage with one another. For those that attended the @ FOCUS event in Madison, notice the reference to “befriending.”
Be sure to put the 2023 line-up on your calendar:
- Live @Osthoff, May 23 – 24 Osthoff Resort, Elkhart Lake
- CEO Retreat, July 11 – 12 Hotel Retlaw, Fond du Lac
- Women’s Forum, September 19, Hyatt Regency, Milwaukee
- The Summit, October 25 – 26, The Trade Hotel/Deer District, Milwaukee
And now for the truly exciting news: For those early-career association professionals looking to build a community/network of Association peers to enhance your leadership skills for career growth, I’m excited to share that WSAE will be kicking off a program during the October Summit to help newcomers to the association world a chance to engage through education and networking over the course of a full year. Watch for more details to be released soon.
Thank you to all the WSAE led committees that are working hard to deliver top-notch programs in 2023. Please join me at one or all of the 2023 events. I look forward to befriending you there.

Foster Inclusion and Belonging with an Event Code of Conduct
|
by John Krapek and Kelly Veit, IOM
2022 represented an in-person events renaissance for association professionals as members excitedly return to conferences, seminars and tournaments. As schedules continue to heat up, one of the best tools to make sure your organization is living up to its Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging policies is having a Code of Conduct for your events. It gives participants (and staff) assurances that they will be respected and well treated, as well as letting them know what to do if problems arise.
We have been thrilled to get back to seeing our members face to face and our experiences have been overwhelmingly positive, but we have also seen behavior at events that was not respectful of all participants and staff. In fact, this piece is inspired by article co-author Kelly Veit’s experience as an attendee at an association golf outing. She experienced lewd comments, a series of microaggressions and was rear-ended in a golf cart at full speed all by the same individual while others looked on.
“I’ve never experienced this sort of behavior at a professional event. After processing what happened I quickly put on my association hat and wondered what I would do if this was reported at one of our events and more importantly, what we can do to help prevent this type of behavior in the first place,” Veit said.

What Does "Back to Normal" Actually Mean in 2023?
|
Reflections, Predictions, and the Changing State of Conferences
WSAE member Omnipress has released their 2023 Conference Industry Report. This is the 9th edition of the report, which features data collected from a survey of over 200 meeting professionals.
Prior to the pandemic, respondents to our survey were almost exclusively referring to an in-person experience. In 2023, that is no longer the case. While it’s true that in-person events are finally “back,” they are no longer the default format for delivering a conference. In-person, hybrid, and virtual events are all viable options. Organizations are making decisions based on factors like staff size, budget, and the industry they serve. Additionally, respondents are looking at their entire portfolio of educational offerings more holistically, choosing the best format for each program or event.
