The following guidelines can be applied to many different weather emergencies, but OSHA specifically says the following regarding “Employer Responsibilities to Protect Workers During Hurricanes”. OSHA states that all employers are responsible for the safety and health of their workers by providing a safe and healthful workplace. Regarding a hurricane, it is important for employers to communicate the information to their workers ahead of a potential hurricane. An evacuation plan should include:
• Conditions that will activate the plan • Chain of Command • Emergency functions and who will perform them • Specific evacuation procedures, including routes and exits • Procedures for accounting for personnel, customers, visitors, and animals • Equipment for personnel (communication, transportation, etc.)
Employers are also required to protect workers from hazards associated with the aftermath of a hurricane. These hazards may include, but are not limited to, downed power lines, fallen trees, flooded areas and high volumes of construction debris. Workers should be trained on safe work practices for each activity they perform. They should receive the proper Personal Protective Equipment from employers.
