Cybersecurity And You: Why You’re Not as Secure as You Think
By Sara Truesdale Mooney, CAE, Senior Vice President, Association of Equipment Manufacturers When it comes to the current landscape of cybersecurity , experts agree it’s not a matter of if, but when, an association will experience a cyberattack. With cybersecurity on the mind of every association leader, WSAE assembled a panel of cybercrime, legal, and IT experts to speak to the topic at the recently held LIVE! @ The Osthoff education event. During the May 23 session, panelists Amanda J. Knutson, FBI Supervisory Special Agent, Joe Ruskey, IT security expert and owner of Dependable Solutions, Inc., and attorney Molly Arranz, Chair of the Cybersecurity & Data Privacy Service Group at Amundsen Davis Law Firm, shared how companies and consumers should be diligent about cybersecurity, and how association boards can meet their fiduciary duty to protect members’ data. Over the course of the one-hour session moderated by Eugene Thede, Network Administrator at The Osthoff, the panel presented the current landscape of threats and bad actors, revealed how associations can best defend against and prepare for cyberattacks, as well as detailed the key elements of a proper incident response plan.

Top 5 Board Governance Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
By Sandy Koehler, CAE, Association Acumen
While all governance errors are important to avoid, perhaps the most damaging one is the Failure to Understand Fiduciary Duties. As stewards of the organization’s financial welfare, board members must understand the impact of any decisions they make or choose not to make. Since these decisions often have far-reaching implications, not only on the association’s annual bottom line, but also on future financial outcomes, it’s crucial that boards understand the consequences of any actions they take. Board members should know how to read a financial statement, have sound investment advice to counsel them and feel comfortable asking hard questions at any time to alleviate or dispel concerns.

Raise the Board’s Financial IQ
What is your board’s financial IQ? That’s a question every association CEO should be able to answer. While you may not have a Warren Buffett in the group, hopefully, there are some above-average number crunchers...
