Thinking About a New AMS? Tips for Small Associations and Non-IT Professionals
By Erin Russell, Director of Membership and Communications, Non-Ferrous Founders’ Society If asked to name the most critical piece of software in your association’s “tech stack,” most association professionals would likely point to their Association Management System (AMS). There are hundreds of AMS platforms in the U.S. alone, and that number is rapidly growing. Finding the one that is the best fit for your association is a daunting task for any association, but particularly for small-staff associations and those without in-house technology expertise. My tips are not intended to be a list of “what to look for in an AMS.” This will vary widely from one association to another—trade versus professional associations, large vs small associations, and so on. There are a good number of resources that cover this territory, as well as professional consultants who can assist you in determining what you are looking for in an AMS. Side note: do not expect that you will know what you are looking for unless you have been through the selection process before--even then, technology has changed so quickly that you will still have a lot to learn. These tips focus on the process of AMS selection and transition, rather than the AMS itself. They will likely apply in some form to all associations, but they are particularly important for small associations, those without technology specialists, or those going through the process for the first time.

ASAE Starts Free Coalition to Help Pass Workforce Legislation
ASAE has been working to build support for the bipartisan, bicameral Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act (S. 722 / H.R. 1477), which would expand economic opportunities and increase access to postsecondary credentials. To amplify the association industry voice, ASAE and its advocacy partner in workforce development, the Professional Certification Coalition, together established the Tomorrow’s Workforce Coalition.
